Rusty Scissors

Latest in the series of "ordinary objects." The bits of black on the handles were supposed to be remnants of black enamel paint, but I think the matte finish of the black is too flat and thus doesn't suggest the depth and shine of a black enamel. Perhaps an overpainting of acrylic would have remedied this. Alas, something to remember for the future. 5" x 7" watercolor, pen & ink, brush & ink, on Fabriano cold-pressed, 140 lb. paper.

See, now, I remember these 'old red-handled scissors' (that's exactly how we referred to them!) whose handles had simply lost their luster over the years. In other words, I don't think the flat black is a problem.

Maybe just a tad, and a wee one at that. But otherwise, I think it's a spectacular depiction. And a great subject. I'm thinking there should be some groanful pun lurking here about how the useful but often over-looked value of the things but my brain is working on a deficit today...

maybe you could edit the "how" out of that awkward sentence... Nah, leave it. Proves my point about the deficit...

I think the enamel looks right for old, rusty scissors where the enamel has been dulled by dirt and the accumulation of oils from being used.
