Bacon's Castle Flowers

I was in Virginia all last week, visiting family and enjoying our usual July 4th activities. Although I've been there too many times to count - starting with school field trips as a child, I always have to drive up Route 10 into Surry County and see Bacon's Castle, also known as the Arthur Allen House. Constructed in 1665 by Allen, a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, the house is one of the few remaining examples of Jacobean architecture outside of Europe. Now on the National Register, the "castle" is owned and maintained by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia antiquities. The house became known as Bacon's Castle because it was seized by Nathaniel Bacon and his supporters during Bacon's Rebellion of 1676-77.

Although I love the house, I'm naturally drawn to the garden, which was reconstructed based on historic records and archaeological work on the site. When I visited last week, there were bumblebees everywhere, drawn to the hollyhocks and sunflowers.
